Dancing the Landscape

Research Lab
Call for Participants:

Dancing the Landscape:
Embodying and Performing Place
with Sally Morgan

Using an interdisciplinary praxis based in site-specific dance, ecosomatics, improvisation and place based/environmental education, we will attempt an investigation into the experience, embodiment and performance of place.

How can we reinhabit and reclaim the sensing, perceiving and imaginative body through dance and movement in order to make sense of place?  How can we tune our senses to become more fully present, to participate in the interconnected web of the sentient world?

How do we begin with the body as the first site of inquiry into understanding place and environment? How can we give voice to our experiences of place through movement and improvisation in order to reflect the animate world and our place within it? How can we dance the landscape?

Days are structured around specific themes: The Body as Place, Extending Fields of Self/Fields of Care, Making Contact: Body to Body, Body to Earth, Placing Ourselves: Location, Proximity and Intimacy, and Performing Place.

Reflection and feedback will be part of our daily process. If participants agree, feedback will contribute to both Morgan’s MES thesis portfolio work and to the writing of a (as-of yet untitled) field guide for the somatic investigation of ‘place’.

Please be ready with pen/notebook, comfortable studio attire and weather appropriate clothing for the afternoons. Bring your own questions about the subject with you!

This lab is open to all levels of movers (dancers, artists, scholars etc).

This will be held in both Hubbards, Nova Scotia (August 20-24, 2012) and in Toronto, Ontario (October 1-5, 2012). Please see side bar to link to the detailed information for the location you are interested in or click on the facebook pages linked below.
